When it comes to cutting metal plates, you might find it difficult to get a clean and consistent cut. This is where lasers can come in. One of the many uses of lasers is to cut metal plates. Whether you are cutting stainless steel, mild steel, or aluminum plate, laser metal cutting is an extremely accurate process and creates a high-quality cut.
You might know that the word “laser” is an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. However, you are still wondering just how laser cutting in Ontario works.
How Sheet Metal Laser Cutting Works
A laser consists of a highly concentrated beam of light in a single wavelength. A typical laser is part of the infrared colour spectrum, which means that the naked eye cannot see it. As this beam of light travels through the machine, mirrors may move the light in different directions until the worker can focus this beam onto the plate. The nozzle may also use compressed gas, including nitrogen or oxygen.
The machine may use a lens to focus the laser beam. The machine must focus the beam precisely so that the beam is perfectly round and centred. When the machine completely focuses the beam in one spot, there is an extremely large amount of heat in that one spot. The extreme heat and focused beam allow the worker to precisely cut the sheet metal. In laser metal cutting, this beam will melt the metal. The worker may use nitrogen under pressure to blow this melted metal out.
How CNC Machining Works
A computer controls a CNC Machine to move the cutting head over the metal plate in the right shape. The pre-programmed computer will direct capacitive height control system to help maintain the right distance between the nozzle and plate. This will determine where the focal point is in relation to the plate’s surface. You can easily control the quality of the cut by raising or lowering this focal point.
This is just one of the many things that can control the quality of the cutting process. When the operator controls each of these things the right way, cutting will be safe, accurate, and reliable.
